First of all, let it be known that Halle Berry is a friend to Interracial Love Magazine. We love her! But, something was bothering us, if Halle is so well-received as Storm on X-Men, what happened in Catwoman?
Let's take a look.
It was inevitable after Michelle Pfeiffer stole scenes as Catwoman in "Batman Returns" that her black-latexed anti-heroine would get a spinoff of her own. But when the inevitable occurred in 2004, this time with Halle Berry playing the character, audiences tried hard to cover up the kitty litter.
No one involved with the movie came out unscathed. Not Berry, who just two years earlier had won an Oscar for "Monster's Ball"; not Sharon Stone, who chewed up the scenery as the movie's villainess; and not Pitof, the French filmmaker making his American directorial debut. He went back to his native land and hasn't directed a theatrical feature since. The movie is another example cited by studios in their long-held contention that female superhero movies just don't work.
So, what did Halle have to say about her role in Catwoman? Let's get her take, shall we?
Halle Berry says making Catwoman was a highlight of her career despite it being a box-office flop.
The movie was slammed by critics and Berry's performance was awarded a Razzie – the prize for Hollywood's worst acting.
"I had a wonderful experience on Catwoman, a wonderful experience," she commented. "Some perform well, some don't. The audience has a right to reject certain things. But it doesn't mean the experience was anything less meaningful for me than anything else I've ever done."
"In fact it was one of the highlights because I pushed myself and grew as an artist in ways that never will be realised by anybody but me. To me it was well worth it."
The apparent belief that fans would pay solely to see Halle Berry in a skintight leather unitar, all while taking in the idea of a all-new Catwoman, unrelated to the real Catwoman, was from from purr-fect.
Even the video game was a flop! (ouch!)
